Mozambique Health Workers Unite for Dignified Pay and Conditions

Maputo, Mozambique – Mozambique’s public health system was brought to a standstill this week as nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals joined ongoing strikes by doctors seeking improved salaries and working conditions.

The work stoppage meant only maternity wards were still operating in Maputo’s major hospitals on Monday, leaving most citizens without access to vital health services.

Strikers are demanding the government reverse the punishing pay cuts and unstable contracts imposed in January. “We cannot serve our people diligently under such circumstances,” said nurse Amelia Bande.

The actions underscore health workers’ essential role in society and follows protests in other African countries over public sector pay amid economic duress.

Many Mozambicans empathise with the strikers’ plight. “They work so hard caring for us all. Of course, they deserve better,” said a concerned local resident.

As African economies face headwinds, fiscal prudence must be balanced with investing in social sectors like healthcare. Let us heed these workers’ appeals and unite to uplift our professions. Their dignity and welfare are tied to our nation’s well-being.

Through social dialogue and good-faith negotiations, shared solutions may be found. But after years of selfless sacrifice, no government can deny its health workers their due. May their steadfast example inspire united action across Africa to build just, prosperous societies that honour those who serve.
