Madagascar’s Constitutional Court has officially validated the re-election of President Andry Rajoelina, who secured 59% of the votes in a controversial election held two weeks ago. This win grants Rajoelina a third term despite opposition complaints about the credibility of the vote. The court’s decision comes amidst a low 46% voter turnout and widespread boycotts by most opposition parties.

Florent Rakotoarisoa, the head of the Constitutional Court, announced, “Andry Rajoelina is elected as the president of the Republic of Madagascar.” The election saw ten out of 13 contenders withdrawing, citing concerns about the credibility of the electoral process and urging their supporters not to participate.

Despite opposition protests and clashes, the court rejected attempts to annul Rajoelina’s candidacy. His two main rivals, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko and former President Marc Ravalomanana, secured 14% and 12% of the votes, respectively. The electoral process faced significant controversy, with the opposition accusing Rajoelina of unfair conditions.
