African Union Gains G20 Entry, But Scrutiny May Follow

The African Union is poised to join the Group of 20 major economies as a permanent member at this weekend’s summit in India, marking a long-sought goal for the continent. However, with inclusion comes greater expectations and pressure.

Rich Western nations are belatedly courting Africa amid a scramble for resources and geopolitical influence. Recognition of the continent’s economic potential has grown, particularly its wealth of battery metals for clean energy transitions.

By backing AU membership, the G20 aims to counter rising Chinese and Russian clout in Africa. But the AU must now prove itself ready to contribute at the highest global table.

Past African exclusion from G20 deliberations has been lamented. South Africa alone could not adequately represent the diverse continent. This elevation is an overdue acknowledgement of Africa’s voice in global policy.

However, the AU’s struggles with regional crises raise questions about how it can effectively steer G20 discourse. Military coups and civil wars have continued unabated, testing the AU’s credibility. Stronger institutions and decisive action are needed.

If the AU cannot exert influence over its 55 member states, how impactful can it be alongside titans like the US, EU and China? Its internal challenges risk being highlighted under the G20 spotlight.

But Africa deserves this chance to shape global governance. With unity and assertive diplomacy, the AU can advance African interests and development priorities within the G20. This milestone must inspire greater continental integration.

Let Africa’s rightful place at the table drive further progress. The AU can bloom into an effective G20 participant, but only by deepening prosperity, democracy and stability back home.
